Beast Tamer episode 9 review (2024)

Summary
Rein and friends are now at the entrance of the mines in order to fulfill a request from Gantz to put a stop to the mithril from being further stolen by thieves. Rein suspects that there is beast tamer among the thieves since they had been spotted by a bird which acted as a scout.

They were greeted with violence once they ventured inside the mines but Rein’s party easily suppressed the hostiles. Rein squared off against the last of the thieves without any issues and defeated him, only for the rascal to summon a B-rank monster called a behemoth. After the thieves whom they have captured were moved outside, Rein fought off the monster with Kanade proving assistance. Rein took control of the monster from the enemy beast tamer, but the latter’s provocation made the behemoth go on a rampage which forced our MC to take it out.

The thieves then were interrogated and all had a grudge against Gantz for selling them mediocre weapons from his store. Gantz felt remorse and Rein urged him to start making the best weapons again as penance. Gantz then fulfilled Rein’s request for a gauntlet and dagger as his weapons. Meanwhile, Arios the trashy hero, had been firing beast tamers non-stop since they can’t meet his expectations which made Mina to worry but still decided to trust this bastard since he is the hero. Rein felt sad to learn that the adventurers who had been stealing mithril from the mines were sentenced to hard labor and their adventurer licenses removed.

Rein then took the twins out on stroll since Kanade and Tania were still asleep. The twins then asked Rein if he felt any ability now he tamed them but the latter felt nothing which made the twins depressed. Rein assured the twins that he will still treasure them as his comrades even if he did not get any abilities from them after they had been tamed. Our merry group decided to get more food when they were suddenly approached by a man declaring the twins to be his.

Review
Ah, finally, an episode with lots of fighting that was absent from the previous one since it was more on plot and fan service. The twins had more screen time on this episode compared to Kanade and Tania, but cat girl still did her best to support Rein in battle against the behemoth. Now, I can officially declare that Rein is OP since he can take control of any beasts tamed by other beast tamers.

I also declare that what Rein did is complete bollocks since we never saw him practicing that kind of technique on-screen to make it believable for the audience watching this show. I know his being OP came from the abilities he inherited from the ultimate species, but at least give us some kind of evidence he went on some training in a form of a flash back that he attempted it but failed since it is near impossible as he had mentioned. And you can do such a feat just by believing in your self? Nice try bub :3

Also, like what I mentioned before, Gantz’s action did bite him back in the @$$ after making mediocre weapons disguised as the finest. I’m not defending the thieves for what they did, nor were their actions justified, but Gantz also shares responsibility for what happened and also should be thrown in the slammer. He should also appeal to the guild to lower the thieves’ sentence to make it up for what they did if I were in his shoes but I guess the story arc ended with Gantz just learning his lesson to never repeat his past actions. This episode also added more depth on what beast tamers can do since it is possible to tame monsters aside from animals in which Rein may be capable of doing the same thing in the future. Looks like Arios is cooking up something sinister with the ominous ring he has in his possession. Will this @$$hole ever stop being obsessed with his revenge against our boy?

Overall, this is good episode, a better one compared to the previous chapter that I have watched. With the appearance of the man near the end of the episode, will he brew up some sort issue causing a lot of complication to Rein and the fairy twins? Tune in again next time to find out.
