When do the UEFA Champions League semifinals start?
The UEFA Champions League semifinals round is scheduled to start on Tuesday, April 30, with the Bayern vs. Real Madrid first leg match. Dortmund and PSG are set to play their first leg match on the following day, Wednesday May 1.
Similar to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals round, each club in the semifinals will play one home match and one away match. The two clubs that emerge from the Bayern-Real Madrid and Dortmund-PSG semifinal matchups with the most goals will advance to the UEFA Champions League Final, set for Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Wembley Stadium in London, England, and streaming live on Paramount+.
As a note: If Bayern and Real Madrid (and/or Dortmund and PSG) end their semifinals matches with the same number of aggregate goals, then 30 minutes of extra time will be added to their second leg match. If at the end of that time, the two clubs are still tied, then the action will go to penalty kicks.
How did Bayern and Real Madrid get to the semifinals?
Bayern and Real Madrid got to the UEFA Champions League semifinals round by breezing through the group stages without losing a single match.
From the group stages, the teams moved on to the Round of 16. There, Bayern played Lazio, dropping the first of two matches 0-1, but storming back with a 3-0 victory in the second to advance. Its next opponent was Arsenal. Those clubs tied the first match 2-2, but Bayern was able to seal the deal at home with a 1-0 victory.
Bayern entered the tournament with the second-best odds to win. The lofty expectations were due to the reputations of star striker Harry Kane, and legendary German midfielder Thomas Müller, the latter of whom has spent his whole career with Bayern (and earned 12 Bundesliga titles in the process).
Real Madrid faced a more harrowing route to the semifinals. It eked out a 2-1 aggregate victory against Leipzig before facing tournament favorites Man City in the quarterfinals. Tied after both matches and extra time, Real Madrid went on to win in penalties, 4-3.
